Advancements in Spine Treatments Gives Patients More Options
Through advancements in medical technology, minimally invasive procedures are now offering more than traditional procedures. The same can be said for minimally invasive spinal decompression, a spine procedure used to treat patients suffering from various spine conditions. Learn about the types of decompression procedures and their potential benefits.
Designed to relieve pressure on the spine, minimally invasive spinal decompression is done when patients have a ruptured disc in one of the areas of the spine. Patients suffering from pain in their neck, lower back, or even arms and legs may see a specialist at Orthopedic Associates of Port Huron to see if this procedure is right.
“There are three main types of spinal decompression,” says Dr. Neil Pasia, spine specialist at Orthopedic Associates of Port Huron. “Those three types are discectomy, laminectomy, and cervical foraminotomy, each relieving symptoms of a specific spine condition.”
A discectomy spinal decompression is done in the lumbar area, usually to remove a herniated disc. A laminectomy spinal decompression is typically done to remove a bone to help a spine condition known as spinal stenosis. The third main type is known as cerical foraminotomy, a procedure done to relieve a pinched nerve.
Minimally invasive spinal decompressions have the following benefits:
- Smaller scars
- Fewer complications
- Less muscle invasion
- Faster recovery time
